The Orange Lutheran boys golf team is ready to hit the links this week, and coming off of a CIF-SS team playoff appearance last season, the Lancers are prepared to make some noise in the Trinity League.
After serving two years as the JV coach and then two years as the varsity assistant coach, Darren Kelso is looking forward to taking the reins.
“I’m very excited to lead the program and am very excited about my coaches,” says Kelso. “They are wonderful people.”
The Lancers have three returning varsity seniors who will be leading the charge, including UCLA commit and All-Trinity League golfer Mason Greene. He will be joined by senior returners Hasnayn Nazir and Michael Stumme, along with senior and first-year varsity golfer Bradley Leon.
This year’s varsity roster also includes three freshmen golfers, Ryan Crosby, Aidan Han and Dylan Spoolstra, and Kelso is looking to the senior leadership to help mentor the younger players both in golf and in character.
The program has grown in recent years and now fields nearly 40 golfers across three teams. In addition to their performance on the course, developing well-rounded student athletes remains the program’s top priority.
“We’re hoping to bring a competitive edge to a very challenging Trinity League,” says Kelso. “But beyond that, we’re going to continue what was built here (by Coach Nacho) by putting emphasis on strong Christian character. We will measure our success this year based on that, number one.”by Jenelyn Cunningham Russo ‘88
